National Seminar on Coding Theory "Professor Stefan Dodunekov"

From 19 to 22 November in hotel "Balkan", Chiflika vilage in Troyan municipality, the National Seminar on Coding Theory "Professor Stefan Dodunekov" for 2015 will be held. Since 2014 onwards seminar is named after acad. Stefan Dodunekov who was a Director of IMI from 1999 to 2012 and Chairman of the Union of Mathematicians in Bulgaria from 2001 to 2012.

The scientific program of the seminar will be held on 20 and 21 November and includes reports, PhD theses presentations and discussions. The seminar is an annual reporting session of the section Mathematical Foundations of Informatics at IMI-BAS.

The National Seminar on Coding Theory was founded in the 80s by acad. Stefan Dodunekov and has since been held annually at the end of the year.

Among the scientific community the research of acad. Stefan Dodunekov on coding theory is well known. It covers a wide range of issues - from the fundamental tasks with importance to abstract algebra and finite geometries to purely practical problems in the field of data protection. Among his most important contributions in the late 70s and early 80s must be noted the solving of the main task of coding theory for binary codes in dimension 7 and 8, the result achieved in fierce competition with famous mathematicians like Ray Hill, Henk van Tilborg, Thor Heleset, Noboru Hamada and others.

In the 90s of the 20th century, together with his students, he introduced and explored the so called "Codes with maximum achievable distance" (almost MDR-codes). This research evoke huge interest worldwide and are repeatedly cited. Significant contribution is the research of acad. Dodunekov on self-dual codes, spherical codes and designs. These studies reaffirm acad. Dodunekov as one of the leading scientists in coding theory in the world.
