The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (BAS) participates in the educational activities with school students and young talent through training and work with outstanding students for participation in international olympiads and competitions, through the High Students' Institute of Mathematics and Informatics established in 2000, as well as through training and retraining of school teachers to implement innovative methods in teaching mathematics and informatics.

Members of IMI staff have taught at a lot of national and international training schools, notably the International Research School for secondary school students RSI (Research Science Institute), which is held every summer in the U.S. with the joint efforts of the Center for Excellence in Education (http://www.cee.org) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). IMI delegates two representatives of the School Students' Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (SSIMI) as participants and a member of the Department of Education in Mathematics and Informatics as a tutor. 

Members of the IMI staff actively participate in:

• the organisation of competitions and olympiads at national and international level in mathematics, informatics and linguistics: the Winter competitions in Mathematics, Informatics and Mathematical Linguistics, the Spring tournaments in Mathematics and Informatics, the Autumn tournaments in Mathematics and Informatics and Information Technology, Christmas Mathematics tournament, Chernorizets Hrabar tournament in Mathematics and Informatics, and many others.
• the scientific support of the activities of the High School Students' Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (HSSIMI); researchers from IMI participate in the peer review of student projects, judging competition sessions of HSSIMI, lecturing at summer research schools for students and teachers and supervision of student projects at these schools.

At the end of 2011 the George Chilikov Foundation was established with a donation of M. Chilikov and I. Baycheva with the purpose of supporting the preparation and participation of national student teams in international competitions and Olympiads. According to the will of the donors, the Foundation is managed by IMI—BAS.
