Management
The Management of the Institute for Mathematics and Informatics includes (article 34 of the Statutes of BAS):
- the General Assembly of the Scientific Staff;
- the Scientific Council;
- the Director.
The General Assembly
The General Assembly (GA) of the Scientific Staff includes all persons employed full-time at IMI, holding an academic position or a scientific degree. The GA adopts, amends, supplements the Statutes of IMI; elects and recalls its representatives in the General Assembly of BAS; chooses, changes, and complements the membership of the Scientific Council of IMI; discusses the programmes of the candidates for Director of IMI and approves the reports of IMI together with the Scientific Council.

The Scientific Council
The Scientific Council is the collective scientific management body of IMI, elected for a four-year term. Its members are holders of DSc degrees, associate and full professors, corresponding and full members of BAS and one young scientist with an academic degree. Their number is between 15 and 25. The Scientific Council elects its Chairman for its term in office. The meetings of the Scientific Council are public, unless otherwise prescribed by law.
The Scientific Council determines the policy of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics. It approves the plans and reports on the fulfilment of the IMI's research and educational activities; accepts completed planned and contracted research; approves the IMI's budget on a proposal from the Director; decides on the creation and closure of scientific structural units within IMI; approves the Director's proposals of Deputy Directors and Scientific Secretary; elects the heads of the IMI structural units; announces vacancies and conducts elections for academic positions and proposes the dismissal of persons holding academic positions; initiates and terminates doctoral students' terms of study; decides on the disposition of property owned by IMI; chooses the editorial boards of IMI's periodicals.

Director, Deputy Directors, Scientific Secretary
The Director of IMI may be a DSc, an associate or full professor with an academic degree, a corresponding or full member of BAS, employed full-time at IMI. The Director is elected by the Board of BAS for four years and may not serve more than two consecutive terms.
The Director represents IMI before all authorities and organisations at home and abroad; administers IMI's budget and funds, organises and manages IMI's administrative tasks; appoints and dismisses IMI's academic and support staff; performs other duties issuing from legal texts, assigned by the management of the BAS or arising out of contracts.
The Director appoints the Deputy Directors and the Scientific Secretary of IMI after approval by the Scientific Council. The Deputy Director replaces the Director in his absence and may manage certain aspects of the IMI's activities as assigned by a written order of the Director. The Scientific Secretary assists the Director in the planning and reporting of scientific and educational activities and performs other duties as assigned by a written order of the Director. The Deputy Directors and the Scientific Secretary may not serve in these positions for more than two consecutive four-year terms.
The Managing Director for Administrative and Business Activities shares the Director's responsibility for these activities.
