The Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (BAS) has a long-term strategic vision for an innovative approach to the system of education in mathematics and informatics at all levels. The high scientific potential of the Institute's academic staff is a prerequisite for top-quality competitive education and training of very competent specialists.

IMI is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at universities in the country within bilateral cooperation agreements or through its specialists: Sofia University—Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Paisiy Hilendarski University of Plovdiv, New Bulgarian University, Neofit Rilski Southwest University of Blagoevgrad, Varna University of Economics, University of Library Studies and information Technologies, Angel Kanchev University of Rousse, Lyuben Karavelov University of Structural Engineering and Architecture, American University in Bulgaria, College of Telecommunications and Post in Sofia, University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy, European Polytechnic University in Pernik, Burgas Free University, St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, VUZF University (Higher School of Insurance and Finances) in Sofia, Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv, etc. Members of IMI's academic staff lecture at foreign universities: the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences in Pakistan, AwesomeMath, University of Santa Cruz and Cornell University in USA, University of the French West Indies, University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Software Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc.

Within an agreement for cooperation with the New Bulgarian University students are trained at IMI in three postgraduate programs: Applied Statistics, Project Management in Information Technology, and Financial Accounting Management and Insurance.

Since 2012, on the basis of a cooperation agreement between IMI—BAS and the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, student internship programmes in mathematics and informatics are being offered. In 2013 IMI joined the Ministry of Education and Sciences's projectStudent Practical Training as an employer, offering over 30 topics in mathematics and informatics. Between August and December 2013 more than 10 students from various universities in the country underwent ​​a 240-hour practice under the supervision of members of IMI's academic staff.
