From July 10th to 14th, 2017, the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, with the support of the Union of Bulgarian Mathematicians and the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", organizes the Second International Conference MATHEMATICS DAYS IN SOFIA. The conference is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
The prestigious scientific event will be opened by the Vice-President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mrs. Iliana Iotova, on July 10, 2017 at 9:30, in Sofia Hotel Balkan.
The first Conference was held three years ago at the initiative of a number of prominent Bulgarian mathematicians and informaticians working in Bulgaria and abroad. Both then and now, one of the main tasks of this scientific forum is to further strengthen and deepen the ties with the Bulgarian mathematical diaspora. Thus, Mathematics Days in Sofia is becoming a traditional meeting of Bulgarian mathematicians working in the country and abroad with their colleagues from prestigious scientific centers all over the world, presenting the latest scientific achievements in the field of mathematics and informatics and laying out the paths for future research.
Mathematics Days in Sofia 2017 will be attended by around 250 scientists from over 40 countries. Among them is the world-renowned mathematician Prof. Efim Zelmanov from the University of California, San Diego, USA, a winner of the Fields Medal in 1994 (equivalent to the Nobel Prize in Mathematics). More than 170 talks will be delivered during the Conference.
The IMI Mathematics Prize, set up in 2014, will be awarded at the Conference for the second time. It is given to a Bulgarian citizen up to 40 years of age with high achievements in the field of mathematics. After careful assessment of the nominations received, the IMI Mathematics Prize Committee decided to award the Prize to Dr. Kiril Datchev, Purdue University, USA. The prize will be presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Acad. Troyanski, during the Conference opening ceremony. The prize winner will deliver the first plenary talk.
