President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Mr. Rosen Plevneliev, will open the event on July 7th, 2014 at 9:30 am in "Sofia Hotel Balkan

The International Conference Mathematics Days in Sofia is organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for the first time and will be held in Sofia from 7th to 10th of July, 2014.

Mathematics Days in Sofia aims to become a traditional meeting of Bulgarian mathematicians and computer scientists working in the country and abroad, with colleagues from prestigious research centers in the world to share the latest scientific achievements in the field of mathematics and informatics.

One of the most important goals of the conference, together with its purely scientific aspect to exchange scientific information is to improve the links between mathematical community in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian mathematical diaspora.

In the past 25 years a number of prominent Bulgarian mathematicians and computer scientists left the country, and in particular the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, to continue their work in prestigious research centers in the world. On the other hand, in this period a large number of young people from Bulgaria received their education in mathematics and informatics in university centers in North America and Europe. A whole new generation of young Bulgarians successfully developed their careers abroad. About 60 such compatriots are part of the conference.

The Conference will participate also about 100 mathematicians from Bulgaria and more than 130 well-known international scholars from a number of leading research centers in over 40 countries - Belgium, Britain, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Canada, Korea, Poland, Russia , USA, France, Switzerland, Japan and more. Among them is the world-renowned mathematician Professor Maxim Kontsevich from France, winner of the Fields Medal and the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics for 2014.

Special guest of the conference will be Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon - President of the European Research Council

He will present the activities of the Council in a lecture on July 8th from 12:10 to 13:00 at the Sofia Hotel Balkan. The lecture will be attended by representatives of all other scientific fields in Bulgaria. One of the purposes of this presentation is to encourage Bulgarian scientists from home and abroad to apply for research projects to be carried out in Europe and, in particular, in Bulgaria.
