Historical Notes on the Department of Algebra
After his appointment as Director of the Institute of Mathematics in 1951, Academician Nikola Obrechkoff established the Department of Algebra, Number Theory, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics and became its first Head.
During the first years of existence of the Department, the research topics were strongly influenced by the research interests of its founder Acad. Obrechkoff, which from a contemporary point of view are at the meeting point of Classical Algebra, Analysis, and Probability Theory. The research on purely algebraic topics in the Department was initiated in the early sixties. Today the Department of Algebra is a leading scientific unit in the area of Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Number Theory and their applications in other branches of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences. The Department also maintains good contacts and its staff collaborates with mathematicians from renowned scientific centres abroad.
The Department has always participated actively in the education of students in mathematics and informatics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Sofia as well as in other universities in Bulgaria. A considerable part of the algebraists in Bulgaria have completed their MSc and PhD studies in the Department of Algebra. Former members of the staff and graduates of the Department of Algebra work in academic institutions abroad including USA, Germany, Brazil, etc. The staff of the Department also participates actively in popularizing mathematics and in the work with gifted high school students.
