Abstract.

We consider Weingarten surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean or Minkowski space. These surfaces admit canonical (natural) parameters, which allows us to solve the Lund-Regge problem for this class of surfaces. The background PDE's, describing the surfaces from the subclass of linear-fractional Weingarten surfaces, are found. We discuss basic ideas from the theory of surfaces of codimension one which can be applied to the theory of surfaces of codimension two.
